James McCann: Adelaide Fringe Veteran Turned Austin Breakout

James McCann

James McCann was born in Adelaide in 1991, and he’s been making up for lost time ever since. Stand-up comedian, writer, poet — the man contains multitudes. Thirteen consecutive Adelaide Fringe Festival runs built his reputation, with show titles like "Wolf Creek: The Musical", "The Sound of Nazis", and "McCann-dle in the Wind" doing most of the explaining so he doesn’t have to. Three awards at the 2018 Adelaide Comedy Awards followed, including Comedian of the Year and Best Emerging Comedy, along with TV writing credits on Corey White’s Roadmap to Paradise. He’s also published three books of poetry and written essays for The Spectator, The Australian, and Quadrant. Overachiever doesn’t quite cover it.

McCann’s stand-up pulls from a creative brain that also writes music and poetry, which gives it a texture you don’t often find in this game. Reviews have called him "utterly hilarious" with "distinctly enjoyable" originality — and that tracks.

After opening for Mark Normand on the 2023 Fanny Guy tour, McCann relocated to Austin, Texas in 2024 and became a regular at the Comedy Mothership, opening for Shane Gillis. His 2024 Kill Tony appearances earned him Set of the Year in 2025, and YouTube specials "HEY AMERICA" and "BLACK ISRAELITE" have each cracked a million views. American audiences are catching on fast.
