Andrew Barnett: Ex-Doctor, Festival Regular, Sydney’s Warmest Sharpness

Andrew Barnett, Barney to literally everyone, walked away from a promising medical career to do stand-up full time. Medicine's loss, your Friday night's gain. He hit the ground running in 2010, reaching the NSW State Final of RAW Comedy, and he's barely been off stage since. Sydney crowds know him well from regular spots at The Comedy Store and Happy Endings, and he's taken his act to Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe, Perth Comedy Festival, and Sydney Fringe, pretty much every major Australian festival worth the ticket price.
His comedy lives in the everyday stuff: parenthood, the small absurdities of being a functioning adult, the moments you didn't realise were funny until someone points them out. Warm, sharp, and hits like a conversation with a mate who happens to be hilarious, that same quality has kept him busy in sports broadcasting too. Regular stints on Fox Sports' Sunday Night with Matty Johns and The Back Page, co-hosting The Night Watchmen on Fox Cricket and The Professor's Late Hit on Fox League from 2017 to 2022, plus regular presenting on SEN Radio across NSW and QLD. The man can work any room, whether it seats three hundred or just has a desk and a mic.
The Daily Telegraph called his 2015 Sydney Fringe show a knockout, it earned an extended season, and that same year he took out the comedy prize at the ANZ Blue Rooms Competition. He's opened for Dom Irrera and Ian Bagg, and shared stages with Dave Hughes, Dave O'Neill, and Akmal Saleh. His debut special One Night in Newy landed on YouTube in December 2024, 47 minutes, zero filler. Barney often headlines at Kookaburra’s Comedy.
