Sean Woodland: Fast Jokes, Sydney’s Most Lived-In Stories

Sean Woodland

Sean Woodland didn't walk onto a stage until he was 40, which sounds like a late start until you hear what he was doing before that. Schoolteacher. Semi-pro Aussie Rules footballer. Postman. Cook. Sex toy salesman. The man had a whole career's worth of material before he ever grabbed a microphone. Audiences feel at ease within minutes, like catching up with someone you've known for years, except funnier and with better stories about workplace humiliation.

Sharp and fast, roughly a joke a minute, his style blends observational comedy with self-deprecation and a genuine satirist's eye for cultural pretension and tokenism. The Adelaide Advertiser reckoned he "has more than the average number of laughs up his sleeve," and rugby league legend Tim Sheens put it best: "He made Wayne Bennett piss himself the entire show — and that's bloody hard to do." For someone who started late, Sean hit the ground sprinting: in his very first year he won Australia's richest open mic comp Quest for the Best, reached the Green Faces national final, and made the RAW Comedy state final.

Three national comedy festival tours later, Sean performs internationally and has become a fixture in Sydney's live scene, the kind of act the Kookaburra's Comedy crew keep booking because he genuinely delivers. Catch him headlining Minskys Comedy at Minskys Hotel in Cremorne, alongside Akila, Amelia Navascues, Mark Sahin, and Alan Smith, with Alex Choi hosting. Show up on time. He does not ease you in gently.
